What is Vaginal Atrophy… and why aren’t we talking about it?

The Silent Struggle

Vaginal atrophy, also known as genitourinary syndrome of menopause, is a thinning and drying of the vaginal walls caused by lower estrogen levels, most commonly during and after menopause. Despite being extremely common, it’s rarely talked about, leaving many women to suffer in silence.

Symptoms of Vaginal Atrophy

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Burning or itching
  • Pain during sex
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Urinary urgency or incontinence

Why It’s Under-Discussed

  • Cultural stigma around menopause
  • Belief that symptoms are just a “normal part of aging”
  • Lack of education in both patients and providers
  • Women feeling embarrassed to bring it up

Treatment Options

  • Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants
  • Low-dose vaginal estrogen therapy
  • Laser or radiofrequency treatments in some cases
  • Pelvic floor physical therapy
  • Counseling for sexual health concerns
