Pap Smear vs. Pelvic Exam
Many women use the terms interchangeably, but they are not the same. Both may be performed at the same visit, but they serve very different purposes.
Pap Smear
- Purpose: Screens for cervical cancer and precancerous changes
- Process: Collects cells from the cervix
- Frequency: Every 3–5 years, depending on age and history
- Why It Matters: Detects changes before they become cancerous
Pelvic Exam
- Purpose: Evaluates the overall health of the reproductive organs
- Process: Physical examination of the uterus, ovaries, vagina, and cervix
- Frequency: Often annually, though guidelines vary
- Why It Matters: Identifies growths, infections, prolapse, or tenderness
Why Both Are Needed
A Pap smear looks at microscopic cell changes, while a pelvic exam assesses the organs themselves. Together, they give a comprehensive view of reproductive health.
